Quiz Night

The Bashers have a long tradition of Trivial Pursuits.

Here’s a few notes to help you in getting together a quiz night.

For the organiser (social Director)

  • Set a date – try not to have it clash with major holidays when many people will be out of town or other events which will draw punters away
  • Check availability with the venue
  • Arrange prizes with the President and Social Director
  • Make sure the treasurer will be present to collect the entry fees
  • Decide if a raffle will also be held – get the committee to organize prizes and tickets for this
  • Get a quizmaster – at least a month in advance (give them the directions below)
  • Post the event on the site at least a week in advance.  Include in the announcement post;
    • Venue
    • Date & Time (use event calendar)
    • Mention great prizes
    • optimum team size – but loners are welcome
    • encourage people to invite anyone they know
    • entry fee (usually 100 per head)
    • link to previous results
  • Inform officers from other clubs that they’re pussies if they don’t send a team
  • Submit a listing to City Weekend and Urbanatomy
  • Organise raffle sellers
  • Conduct Raffle draw
  • Distribute prizes
  • Post the results (BS will supply a graphic)

for the quizmaster;

  • get into the habit of collecting potential questions all the time: any time you see something interesting on the net drag it into a folder to go through later
  • do not rely on yourself to remember a great question later
  • select some section categories (you may have been given a theme for the quiz – this will be one of your sections)
  • at least a week before start putting your questions together into Keynote or Powerpoint (ask Birdshit if you need a template)
  • first build an “answers” presentation which has questions and answers
  • only when this is complete then duplicate it and rename it “questions” then remove the answers from it
  • try to avoid questions which are either you know it or you don’t ones. A good rule of thumb is to use questions which people can at least have an educated guess at.
  • try to avoid questions which are fact and figure heavy
  • try to avoid “true/false” or “which one…” questions – as an option use “put the following in order”
  • one or two Bashers in joke questions are okay but remember many punters are not Bashers
  • picture questions are good
  • Pick some good questions for the Buzzer rounds (ones which require some extended calculation are good)
  • for audio questions you’ll need to edit the source file. if you don’t have any audio editing programs a good free one is audacity.
  • you will need to include all audio files if you’re using powerpoint. Best practice is to place the files in the same folder as the presentations before you insert them into the show. then you can copy the entire folder when you move on site
  • don’t be afraid of making the questions too hard – you’d be surprised the crap people know.
  • prepare a rules/intro presentation – ask BS he’ll have one from previous editions
  • prepare answer sheets and have them printed (about 12 should do it) duplex. once again BS can help with a template for this. Put your phone number at the top for buzzer questions
  • Prepare a teachers answer sheet with answers – 2 or three copies – use the answer sheet above so it all lines up when marking
  • BS will take care of the scoring presentation
  • release some clues into the wild (for some of the harder questions). Leave in the comments on the Bashers site.

prepare to go;

  • all documents on a usb stick/disc to transfer to show laptop
    • rules presentation
    • questions presentation
    • answers presentation
    • audio and video files
  • answer sheets
  • teachers cheat sheets
  • a supply of pencils/pens because punters are useless
  • big red marking pens
  • fully charged phone for buzzer questions
  • throat lozenges

standard run order;

  • try to meet BS at the venue early to take care of the technical setup
  • have a run through with yourself before the hoards arrive (a good reason to be early)
  • welcome – encourage punters to get into teams and select a name (give them a few minutes)
  • hand out answer sheets ask teams to write their name at the top of BOTH sides
  • run through rules
  • list sections and ask teams to select a WILDCARD section and CIRCLE that section name on the answer sheet
  • get a drink
  • check wildcard selections
