New Subscription/Restriction system

Hi Guys
You asked for it and i’ve spent some time writing many lines to get this working in as simple to use way as possible.
The old email subscription system is out the door.
The new one you’ll probably find floating around on the post edit page below the “Post Tags” box over on the right. It’s called “Broadcasting”. I suggest you drag it up below the publish box so it’s obvious in the future.

There’s two main functions in this little box.
Firstly you can restrict who can read and comment on the post.
The different options are simply a mirror of the member levels used on the website (to keep things simple).
Loosely they are named as follows;

  • Legends is for site Admin. i.e. Me.
  • Committee is the current committee and many Bashers elders past and present. If you’re getting this then you’re in this group. You are an “Editor” on the site.
  • Bashersis basically playing club members, site “Authors”
  • FamilyThe periphery. Geishas, extras, slightly trusted ex SCC Presidents etc. Site “Contributers”
  • FansAnyone else who has registered on the site (may include recent joiners who haven’t been upgraded yet)
  • PublicThe whole world – the same people who read our content now

Note that obviously it’s hierarchical, meaning that if you send to “Bashers” everyone who is on the “Committee” list and above also has access.
These restrictions apply to notification emails when you post something and who can read the post on the site. Therefore guys will need to login a lot more, which hopefully leads to a lot more responses.
Be aware that regardless of what restrictions you choose the title of your post is always visible to everybody on the site, in emails, rss feeds and twitter.

The other little dingle in this box is the “email this” option. Note for the time being it is unselected by default, i.e. if you don’t check this option no emails will be sent. Emails are now only in plain text format. Also after some discussion last night the emails, for now, will only have the title, a link to the website and a link to the profile page if they want to unsubscribe. Not including the body of the post is a deliberate effort to get more response on the site. First Guinea pigs are you and your response to this post…
One of the cool things with this “email this” button is that later it will turn to an “email this again” button which means if information on say a tour to somewhere rural is updated the post can be sent out again with the latest revisions without having to write another, potentially confusing, post. This may be good in the case of match selections whereby the traditional call to arms post can be resent with the selected team.

Anyway, i think i have far exceeded most of your attention spans now so i’ll let you go forth and explore this unexciting new feature. In the future i may create a page you can use to see who is in each list and maybe even manage that. In the meantime i’m the only one doing that so let me know if someone is a “Basher” proper and i’ll make sure they get upgraded.

cheers
bs
