Business v Daredevils, May 26th Lumberjack

The Daredevils and the Business have had a number of great contests over the recent seasons and this match was to be an epic affair once again.
Filthy was MIA so Stats took over tossing duties and lost. That was to be the highlight of his day. The Business were inserted and Stats and Genghis limped to crease. Stats was back in the hutch in no time leaving an Anugula delivery that swung in prodigiously and clipped the top of off. The first failure of the season for the Business 2013 leading run scorer.

Dazzler joined Genghis with both batsmen struggling to get away some tight bolwing from Anugula and Mahmood. A hamstrung Genghis with runner took on Aungula and gtt him away for four consecutive doubles in the 9th over. With the score at 21 in the 10th Mahmood got one to stay low and beat the defensive push from Dazzler (1 off 18) and following an Aungula maiden was joined in similar circumstances by Genghis (18 off 36) leaving the Business 23-3 in the 12th.

New recruit Fruit Box and A Tois were left to resurrect the Business innings and did so we with sensible cricket putting on 78 runs in 19 overs before A Tois was bowled by Leibowitz in the 31st (101-4). Tubby joined Fruit Box and after being put down by Leibowitz on the long on boundary deposited his 8th and 10th balls amonst Tag Footballers near at Pavilion End. His quickfire 27 (off 21) took the Business to 139-5 with 3 overs remaining. Chitty was promoted to 7 and scored 4 (off 5) before becoming Leibpowitz’s third victim in the final over. Filthy joined Fruit Box 9 off the remaining four balls to take the innings to 160-6 afte their alloted 40 overs.

Fruit Box the star of the show with a composed 65 (off 96 balls) in his debut innings for the Bashers.

The Business felt they were a touch under par in the first innings but runs on the board are always handy. Fielding and early wickets were thought to be key to the defence of the total. The early chance was created of Paps’ bowling but put down by Stats at gully to let the demi-God Erasmus off the hook early. Fortunately Korean’s hands were safer as he grasped a low catch at square leg in Paps’ second over, much to Stats’ relief. 13-1 after 4 and the Business had the early breakthrough. Razzaq Mahmood joined Peter Worth and faced some an excellent open spell from Dazzler and Paps. Paps bowled his full compliment straiht through, beating the bat on numerous occasions and ended with 1-21 off his 8. Dazzler was similarly miserly at the other end and was again unlucky not to fidn the edge of the Daredevils batsmen. His 6 over opening spell going for only 14.

Chitty’s introduction finally bought the second breakthrough as he set up worth beautifully with two short pitched deliveries followed an unplayale yorker. It was a beautiful piece of fast bowling and gave the Business a lift as the Daredevils found themselves at 38-2 in the 15th. Two became three for the Business as Ross Candido got a leading edge that Korean settled under with the score at 40 in the 17th. Cometh the moment cometh the man as Capt. Jon Newton strode in with his team in a spot of bother. He attempted to see off Chitty and Smurfy who were getting to the end of their allotted overs. Both had the batsmen under pressure as the required rate rose steadily as the rain began to fall. In his 7th over on the trot Chitty whipped a delivery through Newton defences and struck the top of off to leave the Daredevils in strife at 62-4 in the 25th.

With the rain really coming down Anugula arrived at the crease to the stock standard chirp and Bashers welcome. He and Mahmood saw off the remaining overs from Smurfy and Chitty. They had put on a further 60 runs off 10 overs when the umpire called time on proceedings with 5 overs of the innings remaining and 39 runs required.
