Bashers Cricket Club

Beginner’s Guide to the Bashers (FAQ)

With the season starting soon and a handful of new Bashers already keen here is a list of FAQ so that all the newbies can find out all they need to know about playing for the Bashers.

1. I don’t have any whites or cricket gear – can I still play?
Yes, indeed, you can still play cricket as the club is well stocked: playing shirts and caps are provided to all paid up members, and trousers, jerseys, and rain jackets are available for an additional 100rmb each. Each team has a kit bag that has enough cricket gear for the whole team to use, so you don’t even need to own any personal kit beyond a pair of non-shit shoes!

2. What does it cost to play cricket for the Bashers?
The season subs are 2000rmb. This fee basically covers our ground fees, and we have sponsors/events to provide for new gear and tours. Once you’re paid up, you’ll get a bus to/from the ground with pies and beers, as much game time as you make yourself available for, and you can join the Bashers tours to Nanjing (May), Beijing (Sept), Xiamen (Oct), Philippines (Nov) and Guangzhou (Dec) – although the full fee of each tour may only be partially subsidized by the club. There’s also a End of Season event covered by these subs.

3. How do I make myself available for games on the blog?
Easy answer! Click register on the bottom of the page, fill in the form and remember your username/password. Once you’re registered, then log in (also at the bottom of the page), and you can post a comment on any event/post. Business is the Basher name for Division 1 (40 over games), Pleasure for Division 2 (30 overs), and Leisure for Division 3 (25 overs). The selection panel meets on a Thursday evening to select the team so make sure you’ve made yourself available by then. Teams will be posted on the Friday morning.

4. Where are the games played?
The games are played at Wellington College or at the SCSC. The Bashers have a bus provided by our main sponsor The Camel to get us to and from the grounds. It will leave from The Camel and return there after for the fines session.

5. The Bashers all seem to have cool nicknames – how do I get one?
Play for the Bashers and after your first game you’ll be given your own Bashers name and cap number, so this really is the least of your worries.

6. The captain has appointed me as “Lumberjack” – what does it mean?
The Lumberjack is responsible for posting a log of the days play for the whole club to enjoy. If you’re appointed Lumberjack, then you should take special notice of all the amusing happenings on the day, and take a few snaps on your phone of the scorecards for reference later. Log in to the blog after the game, and click “Contribute” on the bottom of the website. That will take you to the editing page, where you can entertain the club with your literary skill describing the events of the day’s play on and off the field. We’ve already had a few very fine reports for the first games of the year, so take the time to read them!

7. The Bashers Blazers look fantastic – where do I get one?
The blazer is the quintessential Bashers accessory, and it is common to fine everyone not wearing their blazer after the game. You’ll need your Bashers cap number in roman numerals, and then you head to the Fabric Market on Lujiabang Lu (near the Nanpu Bridge) and go to our tailor. Recent pricing suggests 500rmb for the Blazer and a 10 day production timeline.

8. Have the Bashers ever won the competition?
Yes, the Bashers are one of the rare clubs to have pulled off a win in each division of the SCC League. All our club successes are located here, with Lumberjack links for your perusal.

9. I miss the Bashers mid-week – what can I do?
The Bashers have drinks every Thursday evening at The Camel from 7pm to discuss the exploits of the previous weekend and the one coming up. But mainly it’s about drinking beer. Always a good time so come along after work and get excited for the weekend’s play!

10. Some old Basher is talking up his cricket skills – is it possible to check if it’s just jazz talk?
Yes, the Bashers have an Honours Board for 100s, 50s, and 5-fers that you can check out here, with links to the Lumberjacks when possible. If you search “reports” on the tab at the bottom of the webpage, you’ll also be able to check out some old Bashers lumberjacks.

11. How do I know when all these things are happening?

Rather than constantly hassling everyone on WeChat why not subscribe to the Calendar webcal://basherscc.org/blog/feed/eo-events

Now you will have the most up to date information at your nimble fingertips.

Sponsors Corner:
1. The Camel. These guys support the club with busses and a rebate on drinks, so once you’ve paid up your fees to Sharapova (Club Treasurer), then use your Bashers card every time you eat or drink at the Camel groups fine establishments.

2. 31JIU. The beers on the bus are provided by Frank “Salmon” Li, and our beer sponsor 31JIU. You can order cases and cases of beer at his website. Keep an eye on the blog for some special deals as well!

We are also sponsored by a few other companies that will be updated soon, so make sure to support our sponsors!
