Since I missed most of the actual game in the video, it is necessary to record some of the events of the day. I arrived at 11am as the token 3rd Division player selected – still something of a mystery to me too! The SCC shirt was provided, complete with dashing SCC-red stripes on the sides, and offering an interesting colour combination with the Bashers CC trousers and cap (marginally better than the Korean’s flaming orange hat). The Bashers CC were represented by the “Inquisition”, “Tank”, and myself – plus we provided the scorer and umpire!
Captain Amogh, who was remarkably coherent, provided some inspiration by telling us to “let them get to 100, the Pirates is a social team” and then the Inquisition opened up the bowling from one end and soon combined with J.J. Lim at slip for a quick wicket. Then nothing much happened for a while, except it was starting to get warm out in the field and the batsmen were gaining confidence and middling a few, which meant the bowlers and captain kept changing the field placements. Fortunately, I didn’t have to chase anything, but I noticed Tank putting in some good effort about the field. Abdur Rahman came on and quickly bowled a couple of the Lamma CC batsmen, one vicious seaming delivery even breaking the bail.
For some reason I was re-re-re-positioned to field at fine leg when Tank came on to bowl. His first ball was gloriously dispatched through backward point for four, but he came back with a firey bouncer that had nothing social about it! A few balls later and I looked up to see the ball coming straight at me and I couldn’t help but catch it. I did put down a running chance at mid-off off another bowler, but managed to repeat the first effort an over later by catching a top edge that had about a 5 second hang-time and seemed to come down in a direct line from the sun (since this was the highpoint of my performance I have to add that it takes my season tally to 9 catches). All through the innings there were plenty of clean hits to the boundary by the batsmen, but also regular wickets to keep the game fairly evenly poised at the innings break – Lamma CC 138/6 off 20 Overs.
It was hot work with no drinks break at the 10 over point, and there was only warm water from the cooler. So I wandered over to see how the Leisure were going and noticed their 10th over drinks break consisted of jugs of beer keeping cool in trays of melting ice. It shook me a little, and made me seriously consider why I had chosen the glories of the SCC over the Leisure.
To be fair 138 was an average score, and the win was comfortably set up by some strong batting by numbers 1-4 who knocked off 80 in the first 9 overs, and which was also carried on from 6-8 who finished the job. It is just fortunate that Hog has left so I don’t have to listen to “‘As tha got owt for nowt agen shite shoes?” It wasn’t enthralling to watch, so the Inquisition found a couple of pads for a pillow and went to sleep. In contrast, the last over was compelling. The scores were level and just a single run was needed to win, but a few dot balls and a wicket put the pressure on. Fortunately, Tank came out with a strong baseball slog that cracked the winning runs in a truely American fashion to give the Pirates a 3 wicket win with a ball to spare – SCC Pirates 139/7 off 19.5 Overs.
A few handshakes, a splash about the pool, cold beer, and summer sunshine finished off the afternoon. Thanks to Lamma CC for coming to Shanghai, to “Inky” for the beautiful scorecards, and to “Filthy” for umpiring all 40 overs!
