On another cracking day, the Bashers Div 2 squad were all up bright, early and assembled at The Camel accompanied by an entourage of black-suited Latvians keen to watch/participate in the Noble Game after appearing from a nearby all-night bender. The Skipper sent them away much to the chagrin of some of the assembled members, primarily because he thought that whilst amusing, they had probably peaked in entertainment value around the 7:25 mark.
Our team contained 3 new faces in Neil ‘Sir Garfield’ Beatty, Sean ‘The Korean’ Malcon and Darren ‘Dazzler’ Manning.
We inserted The Devils who reached 153 all out off their 30 overs. The bowling and fielding was strong all around and but for a couple of missed chances, we might have been staring at quite a bit of a smaller total. Sir Garfield pulled a hammy standing at first slip within the first 5 overs and Golden Shears managed to pull a calf muscle dropping a catch in mid wicket, insuring that his inauspicious start to the Bashers continues. He did however show great bravery in limping in at number 11 with a runner to accompany the Skipper’s attempt to knock off the runs, perishing for one run in the process. His current average stands at 0.5.
New boys Dazzler and The Korean both showed promise with the ball; Dazzler in the pace department and The Korean extracting bounce and turn in between the full tosses. His ‘variety’ succeeded in becalming the opposition for a while and showed again how effective slow bowling can be at this level.
Our response started badly with the opening pair going for very few, including a direct hit from Swoop as a substitute fielder accounting for Badabing for 0, stranded yards out of his ground. Three or four of us managed lusty knocks in the teens and twenties but we again lacked someone to anchor the innings and keep the momentum going. We fell for 131 but we keep improving. Next Sunday’s game against Pudong Power will perhaps be the one where we turn the corner.
