Xiamen Cricket & Beach Party

Xiamen Typoons have formally invited the Bashers to come to Xiamen and launch cricket in Xiamen. The Typhoons were voted the most social side at the Shangahai 7s but were totally disappointed with the hospitality and drinking ability of the Shanghai rugby teams. They have challenged the Bashers to restore the pride in Shanghai and come to Xiamen to play the first ever game of cricket in Xiamen. The game will take place at the iconic Gu Lang Yu stadium on Gu Lang Yu Island. The plan is a morning game game followed by 6s. This is a once in lifetime opportunity to break new ground and restore Shanghai's tarnished image.

Nanjng 6s set to eclipse Shanghai 6s? (at least in 2010)

FYI. See e-mail copy from SCC's Mr "Excom" below with 6's update / news of postponment this year. Also learnt a bit of related trivia on Friday - Woodstock designed the Shanghai 6s logo 11 years ago.

Bledisloe Cup, Hong Kong, 30/10/2010

Tickets are out. Pot Bellied Pigs have provisionally allocated me 10 of which 4 are spoken for. Price is HK$1000 (B class). Can't remember who else asked although I think Woodstock and Golden Shears asked for tickets previously. Need to confirm by Saturday. Let me know if you want one.

Cuba – Update

Cubans have come back and suggested that the tour takes place in their winter before May as the weather can bit iffy in May & June. So maybe CNY next year. They also mention that New Year's Eve in Havana is pretty special. They are suggesting a triangular tournament together with the Cayman Islands who also want to tour around the same time so possibility some Bashers can pick up two Intl caps. The tour would be organised through the Caribbean Association to which Cuba belong as cricket is not yet an official sport recognized by the Govt although the Govt Sports Institution would help with logistics. Americans are welcome (Tank:take note).

Cuba & The Bay of Pigs

Further to the discussion on Wednesday night some of us had with the Pot Bellied Pigs Chairman, Anson Bailey, the Pigs have now fedback that they are on for a joint rugby and cricket tour next spring to Cuba with The Bashers. This would be a two week trip and the plan is to fly around the World following the Sun with a stopover in Italy on the way there and either Toronto or Vancouver on the way back. So it really is a World Tour. Players from both teams can play for the other team so if Bashers fancied lacing up their rugby boots there would be games of rugby as well.

Duckworth Lewis – It’s total bollocks

Tonight I was told that the Leisure lost their first game against Pudong due to some contrived rule realated to Duckworth Lewis rule. The SCC needs to get a life. At the lower level of cricket SCC they should be encouraging people to play not revisit a bad experience with their high school maths teacher. This ruling is utter nonsense not only because it is incompensible but because every game relies on impartial umpies from both sides which is not the case. The Law is an Ass or as we say in Glasgow "total bollocks". I might be old fashioned but I used to think that the most runs won the game and if the weather got in the way then it was a draw and off to the Pub.

Sichuan School Trip – April 16th

Any of you old enough to remember the 2008 Sixes will recall that the two auctions we organised that week in HK and Shanghai raised enough money to rebuild a school destroyed by the Earthquake. Together with a couple of my staff I am going there on April 16th (leave Chengdu on 15th) so if any of you have business in Chengdu and want to join the trip let me know. Its a hell of a road trip. Guanyuan is halfway between Chengdu and Xian up a mountain somewhere. The school classrooms and dormitories are now finished so the school is fully functioning. The funds raised have allowed the school to get an extra piece of ground for sports facilities and work is just about to start. The school is actually called the Shanghai Cricket Project Hope school although no-one is sure the good citizens of Guanyuan know what cricket is.
