On a day when, in 57 overs only 7 wickets were taken, what can it be??? Good batting, great partnerships, non-penetrative bowling or just sloppy catching????? After a debacle in the last match it was important we picked ourselves up and got back to our winning ways…indeed we did!!
Having lost the toss again the home side elected to bat on a wet, drizzly afternoon. The opening bowling attack (Bugs/Billy) had all elements a fielding Captain could wish for……swing, pace and aggression!! Yet after 8 overs the score stood at 40 odd with just the one wicket. Change was brought about in Sinbad bowling his “dollies”, tantalising the batsmen with intelligent spin. A great spell which went for 24 runs, a maiden, no extras and a dropped catch!!
At the break the home side were 2 down for 75… tinker and tanker were growing from strength to strength and it was only in the late 29th over that we were able to break this partnership and get “BIG Eric” to walk all the 60 yards for an introductory ball!!
Target 173…sharp ground fielding but miserable catching…8 dropped catches/chances!!
Our pursuit of this total got off to a good start, with openers Pot Hole and Tantric playing some delightful shots, taking toll of some loose deliveries by the opening attack. Both batsmen played with a mixture of watchful defence and savage hitting… always keeping us within the range of the target. Swoop joined in…for quickie 25 which included a HUGE six out of the ground.
A couple of quick wickets by the change bowlers altered the picture somewhat and the game was nicely poised.
At the start of the twentieth over we required 55 to win and were scoring at a rate of about 5 an over. Genghis provided the necessary stability, holding up one end whilst korean picked up the scoring rate again with some hard hitting and well-taken singles. The pair gradually proceeded to take the game away from the home side… eventually bringing us to 15 runs required off the last four overs.
A cool head was needed at this juncture and it came from the erstwhile skipper who hit all the required 15 runs in the 27Th over including a glorious 6…remaining not out for a well contrived 35. An exciting end to an otherwise mediocre show of fielding display from both sides!!
A summer’s afternoon, convivial opposition and an entertaining game of cricket that could easily have gone either way, what more can one ask for!!
A note of appreciation to Omega for keeping score… not sure his numbers added up but a very satisfying result in the end!!
